Gor Mahia’s Legendary Night Running Expedition In Kisumu.

In mid-2015, the legendary Gor Mahia Football Club was on a quest for invincibility. This journey led them to face two tough away fixtures back-to-back within a mere 72 hours. Former Gor Mahia assistant coach, Frank Ouna, reminiscing about this thrilling tale, took to social media to share an amusing incident that sheds light on the humorous side of the invincible’s expedition. The first destination was Awendo, the home of Sony Sugar, then coached by the youthful Salim Babu. The memories of facing Home Stock Ouma, fondly known as Obange, and the enigmatic Obanda made this match a double grudge encounter. Frank Ouna mentions an infamous 2-2 abandoned match from two years earlier that was awarded to Gor Mahia. In 2014, they had also emerged victorious against Sony Sugar in Nakuru, despite playing on a waterlogged pitch during a continuous downpour. The memory of Ali Abondo’s spectacular free-kick goal that sealed a 2-1 win for Gor Mahia in those challenging conditions still lingered. Next up, Gor Mahia faced Ray Omino’s Western Stima in Kisumu. The match proved to be an extremely difficult one for the invincibles, but the players fought valiantly. Following the game, the team retreated to their hotel, graciously hosted by Governor Ranguma. Frank Ouna humorously adds that Luo Governors had a tendency to outdo each other with their hospitality, playfully referring to it as “Pesa mit”, money is good. With their next match scheduled seven days later, the players were given a night off to enjoy themselves. However, there was a condition: they all had to be back at the hotel by 5 am for breakfast and a 6 am departure for Nairobi. Interestingly, the hotel had a special performance by the leading Ajawa luo crooner, Opija Ka Elly, that evening. The atmosphere was electric, and the dancing and music enticed everyone to join in the celebration. Amidst the lively scene, one of the Gor Mahia players, Madowo, had his eyes locked on a beautiful lady from Kisumu. Unbeknownst to him, the lady was already married, and her cop husband was also present in the crowd, keeping a watchful eye on her. The two couldn’t resist each other’s allure and decided to elope to her house, located just behind the team hotel. In a comical twist of events, while they were engaged in private matters, the husband sensed his wife’s disappearance and stealthily entered their home. Madowo, reacting quickly in true footballer fashion, put on his undies and football shorts as makeshift attire. He managed to push the husband aside and made a swift escape. The husband, determined to catch the fleeing player, chased after him, even threatening to shoot. Madowo, however, was not one to give in easily. He eventually mingled with the Ohangla crowd and vanished into thin air, leaving the cop frustrated and empty-handed. In his hasty escape, Madowo left behind his jeans with his wallet and passport in the “crime scene.” It would take months of intervention from high-ranking policemen and the Kisumu Governor’s office for Madowo to retrieve his misplaced documents. To stay incognito and avoid any potential confrontations, he checked in with a new alias, Michael Madowo, whenever they returned to that particular hotel.

Whispers of Change: FKF Premier League’s Transfer Pas de Deux.

In the realm where dreams collide and destinies intertwine, a grand opera of football unfolds. The stage is set, and the curtains rise as the off-season transfer window in the FKF Premier League commences, inviting a dance of talent and aspirations. With the stroke of a pen, contracts are forged, and destinies are woven together, while others find their harmonies reaching their final cadences. Gaborone United, a pillar of the Botswana Premier League, has parted ways with the fiery Kenyan striker, John Mark Makwata. Their symphony had begun in August 2022 when the two united their forces, but now their melodies find their conclusion through a mutual termination. As Makwata embarks on a new chapter, whispers carry the name of Joash Onyango, a renowned defender who once donned the colors of Gor Mahia, Harambee Stars, and Simba SC. The winds of change whisper his name, hinting at a possible migration to the South African shores of Mamelodi Sundowns. The rhythm of opportunity beats strong, as the club is prepared to pay a harmonious sum of Kshs. 5.1M per month for his services, painting a promising future on the canvas of his career. Yet, amidst the ebb and flow of the transfer tides, some melodies remain unaltered. Duncan Otieno, a key player, remains rooted in the soulful land of Botswana, faithfully extending his notes in harmony with the club. Meanwhile, Kenneth Muguna, a maestro whose melodies have echoed far and wide, finds his name whispered across borders. The seductive calls of Police FC and the Tanzanian duo of Geita Gold and Ihefu echo through the air, seeking to add his illustrious tunes to their ensembles. Even an Angolan side casts its eyes upon him, hoping to weave their own tapestry with his skills. Amidst the ever-shifting landscape, one coach takes center stage, orchestrating a symphony of transformation. Kenya Police FC head coach Francis Baraza, who conducted his team without a recognized assistant in the previous season, yearns for a harmonious partnership. His baton points to the talented Salim Babu, the esteemed coach of Nzoia Sugar FC, urging his club to capture his brilliance. Their destinies first aligned 17 years ago, when they composed a masterpiece together at Sony Sugar, capturing the league title. Now, they prepare for a triumphant reunion, an enchanting U-TURN that promises to weave their magic once again. As the chords of fate continue to resonate, the shores of Bandari FC reverberate with a new rhythm. Twahir Muhiddin, a master tactician who once swore off the helm, succumbs to the allure of the head coach position. Against the currents of his initial reluctance, he embraces the challenge, eager to shape a symphony of success. Seeking a companion in this melodious journey, the club seeks a high-profile assistant coach, with Salim Babu, adorned in the colors of Nzoia Sugar, captivating their senses. In this ballet of transfers, even laughter finds its place. Frank Furo, former Gor Mahia assistant coach and a sage of humor, adds a dash of wit to the composition. He urges Bandari FC to welcome Tyson Otieno, a maestro hailing from Kariobangi Sharks. Like a brother to the star of Gor Mahia, Austin Odhiambo, Tyso’s melodies promise to enchant and uplift their spirits. And as the symphony draws to a close, Gor Mahia, a perennial powerhouse, basks in the embrace of continuity. Chairman Ambrose Rachier assures the faithful that the Irish maestro, Johnathan McKinstry, shall continue to conduct their harmonious ensemble. Having guided them to their 20th league title, his baton remains poised to lead them through another sonorous chapter, where dreams meet victory. Thus, the transfer window opens wide, inviting the players and the clubs to dance, as they navigate the allegro of opportunity and the adagio of loyalty. With each transaction and decision, the chords of fate are struck, shaping the composition of the 2023-24 season, a symphony of anticipation that echoes through the hearts of fans and the corridors of football history.
