As a photographer, I had the privilege of capturing some incredible moments during the FKF PL 2022/23 season. One of the highlights for me was witnessing Gor Mahia win the title for a record 20th time. The energy and excitement at the stadium were palpable, and I could feel the weight of history in the air. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Another memorable match was the intense derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. This rivalry is one of the biggest in Kenyan football, and it never fails to deliver thrilling moments. This season, AFC Leopards managed to secure a 2-1 victory in the second leg, ending a seven-year winless streak against their rivals. The atmosphere during this match was electric, with both sets of fans passionately cheering on their teams.

What stood out to me this season was the rise of teams like Tusker, Nzoia, and Kakamega Homeboyz. Tusker had a strong season, finishing in second place and providing tough competition for Gor Mahia. Despite not winning the league, they had a chance to claim the Mozzart Bet Cup and secure a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup. Nzoia Sugar, on the other hand, surprised everyone by finishing fourth after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Under the guidance of coach Salim Babu, they played beautiful football and captured the hearts of fans across the country. And let’s not forget Kakamega Homeboyz, who won the FKF Cup this season, adding to the excitement of the competition.

The season had its fair share of drama and unexpected twists. From transfer bans to incorporating young academy players, Gor Mahia faced numerous challenges. However, they showed resilience and determination, ultimately winning the league. Coach McKinstry highlighted the team’s ability to overcome adversity and praised the players for their efforts.

On the flip side, we also witnessed the disappointment of relegation. Vihiga Bullets and Mathare United both bid farewell to the top tier, with Mathare United experiencing relegation for the first time in their history. It was a difficult blow for a historic club, but they will now compete in the FKF National Super League, aiming to make a comeback in the future.

Individual performances were also noteworthy this season. Elvis Rupia of Kenya Police FC clinched the golden boot with a record-breaking 27 goals, closely followed by Gor Mahia’s Benson Omalla with 26 goals. The battle between these two players was intense and showcased their incredible talent. In terms of goalkeeping, Gor Mahia’s Gad Mathews and Nzoia Sugar’s Humphrey Katasi shared the golden glove, keeping 17 clean sheets each.

As I reflect on the FKF PL 2022/23 season, I am amazed by the passion and dedication of the fans. They filled the stadiums with vibrant colors and enthusiastic displays, creating an atmosphere that truly motivated the teams. Many fans also went the extra mile by participating in club membership programs and purchasing merchandise, supporting their beloved teams both emotionally and financially.

Despite the challenges facing Kenyan football, such as corruption and lack of funding, this season has shown that there is hope for growth and development. The commitment of the players, the dedication of the fans, and the excitement surrounding the sport all indicate a bright future.

I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming 2023/24 season, which promises to bring even more thrilling moments and surprises. I can’t wait to capture the passion, the emotion, and the artistry of Kenyan football once again.
